Lasso and Reverse Lasso

Heatmaps are a powerful way to visualize data density and patterns across a two-dimensional space. To enhance your data exploration, Powerviz provides interactive selection options, including the Lasso and Reverse Lasso options. These options allow you to selectively highlight or exclude specific regions of the heatmap for deeper analysis.

Lasso Option

Lasso is an interactive selection option that enables you to define a custom region of interest on the heatmap by drawing a freeform shape. This is particularly useful for focusing on a specific subset of data points and analyzing trends or anomalies within that selected area.

After selecting the above area it will highlight all selected nodes:

How It Works

  1. Activate Lasso: Click on the Lasso tool icon from the toolbar or select it from the context menu.

  2. Draw Selection Area: Click and drag to draw a freeform shape around the area of interest on the heatmap. The shape can be irregular, allowing precise control over the selection.

  3. Review Selection: Once you release the mouse button, the selected area will be highlighted. The heatmap will adjust to emphasize data within this selection.

  4. Analyze Data: With the selected region highlighted, you can now examine detailed metrics, drill down into specific data points, or perform additional analyses as needed.

Reverse Lasso Option

Reverse Lasso is an extension of the Lasso that allows users to exclude a custom-defined region from the heatmap view. This option is valuable for isolating data outside of a specific area or for comparative analysis between the selected and non-selected regions.

After selecting the above area it will highlight all selected nodes:

How It Works

  1. Activate Reverse Lasso: Select the Reverse Lasso tool from the toolbar or the context menu.

  2. Draw Exclusion Area: Similar to the Lasso tool, click and drag to draw a freeform shape around the region you want to exclude from the heatmap.

  3. Review Exclusion: Once the shape is drawn and the mouse button is released, the area inside the shape will be excluded from the heatmap view, and the remaining data will be highlighted.

  4. Analyze Remaining Data: With the excluded area removed, you can analyze the remaining data, compare it to the excluded region, or perform other comparative analyses.

Conclusion

The Lasso and Reverse Lasso options in Powerviz heatmaps offer versatile tools for interactive data exploration. By allowing users to draw custom shapes for selection and exclusion, these options enable more precise and meaningful analysis of complex datasets. Utilize these options to enhance your understanding of data patterns and make informed decisions based on your heatmap visualizations.
