The "shape" option in a word cloud allows you to change the shape of the overall design of your word cloud. Rather than the traditional circular or rectangular shape, you can choose from a variety of shapes such as hearts, stars, animals, or even custom shapes. You can make it as an icon, image, or shape.

How to apply different shapes?

  • Go to the advanced setting panel “⚙️” and select the shapes option.

  • From the 4 options (icon, image, upload and URL) select the icon or image you want to apply.

  • Mask is automatically enabled, if you don’t want the mask then disable it.

  • Hit apply.

  • Result- The new shape has been applied to the word

Powerviz word cloud offers 4 options to select a shape.

  1. Icons: Select a shape from over 2000 icons.

  1. Images: Provides you with some commonly used shapes such as heart, apple, butterfly, bird, etc. Select an image from the options and hit apply.

  1. Upload: If you already have an image on your computer, then upload it directly on Power BI. Keep in mind that word cloud only supports silhouette images that are a solid shape in one single color.

Note: Upload up to size 500 KB.

  1. URL: This option lets to use an image or shape directly from the web using the image URL. Go to web > Copy image link > Select URL option > Paste the link > Click fetch> You can see the preview of the image > If an image is correct >Hit apply

Note: In case you are using a private link or temporary link you will get an error message.

Note: Make sure to use the public support URL and silhouette image link.

How to reset shape?

There are two ways you can change your shape or delete it.

Here I am assuming you have already selected the shape.

First way:

  • Click on the shape option in the advanced setting there you will see below the applied mask text and the selected image preview is shown.

  • On the image, there is a cross icon X shown click on that.

  • Automatically shape will be removed and now save the applied changes.

Result: The selected image will be removed. You can reselect any shape by going to the shape option again.

Second way:

  • Go to the shape option in the advanced setting.

  • On the left below the corner, you will find the reset button.

  • Click on the reset button and hit to apply.

Result: The selected image will be removed. You can reselect any shape by going to the shape option again.

Applied Mask

You can convert the word shape background into any solid color using a mask. By default, light grey (F2F2F2) color is applied but once you click on the mask you get the color picker option by which you can change the color of the background. Choose the color and transparency level to make the shape more effective.
